Thomas Naert, PhD

Postdoc @ UGent

I am a biomedical researcher rooted in interdisciplinary science, with a career that traverses the landscape of biotechnology, cancer biology and nephrology.

My journey began with a foundational master degree in Biotechnology, followed by a dive into the molecular intricacies of cancer tumor supressors through my IWT-funded doctoral studies at the University of Ghent.

The quest for understanding next propelled me, as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) fellow, further across borders to the University of Zurich. There, I synergized my passion for CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology, cutting-edge light-sheet microscopy and the transformative power of artificial Intelligence.

Now, my research at Ghent University embarks on a mission to further deepen our understanding of polycystic kidney disease, with a novel focus on the cardiovascular manifestations

Through the lens of the versatile Xenopus frog model organism, my work seeks to unravel the complexities of human rare diseases, offering a beacon of hope for unlocking new therapeutic paradigms. Each project is a step towards uncharted territories, seeking answers to some of the most pressing questions in modern medicine.

Join me on a journey where research and innovation bring new understanding to rare diseases.
